BREATH PORTRAITS Saadet_portrait
BREATH PORTRAITS  is a longterm research project, in which choreographer and dancer Chris Leuenberger examines his choreographic work with breath in a series of residencies, workshops and public presentations.

During seven residency weeks, from June till September 2018, Chris shared his choreographic breath practice with 7 artists & collaborators. Through this exchange  a breath portrait was created each week.

All participating artists brought along a song with a personal and emotional meaning. Each portrait is based on the rhythm of the song, which was translated into a breath score. The outcome are seven short soli which were captured as video-portraits in diverse settings.

In the frame of Immer am Achten  all seven portraits were presented for the first time as a video installation. Chris presented his breath-self-portrait as a live performance.

In this same residency Chris will teach the workshop “Breathing Karaoke” at GEN, centro de Artes y Ciencias on November 27th and 29th 2018 from 18:30 till 21:00.

On December 7th Chris Leuenberger and Marcos Ramírez Harriague host a sharing of their collaboration including BREATH PORTRAITS / SELF PORTRAIT  – a danced breath portrait based on a song by Janis Joplin and TOUCH ISOLATION –  the beginning of a performative exploration of men’s fear of touching and being touched.

Cosima_portraitFrom July till September 2018 Chris Leuenberger worked on BREATH PORTRAITS.

BREATH PORTRAITS is a long-term research project in which he aims to take an in-depth look at his artistic practice related to breathing, and his creative network, so as to inject them with fresh ideas and momentum. His plan is to develop a series of seven short solos – the breath portraits of the title – with four of his current artistic partners and three new ones. The project takes the form of a series of residencies during which ideas for new pieces and collaborations can be worked out without the pressure of having to produce and premiere the work by a fixed deadline.

For this project Chris worked with Jenny Beyer, Cosima Grand, Lea Martini, Maria Mavridou, Matthew Rogers, Anna Röthlisberger and Saadet Türköz.
